I think social networks are ruining my relationship because they bring up my expectations as hopes that won’t ever be filled. I’m an asshole.

So I decided to add a girl on Facebook who I had gone to high school with but hadn’t really been friends with at all. And I’ll be honest, I added her to creep on her. And oh boy was this creeping experience an eye opener.

I came to find that she and her fiancé have been apart for 140 days now. ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTY DAYS! This is because he is a marine. I can not even begin to fathom being away from my boyfriend for 140 days. And he’s just my boyfriend, not a fiancé!

For those 140 days apart, she had been taking a photo a day and writing about what her day was like so that her fiancé could go on Facebook while he was in Afghanistan and not feel like he was missing a thing while he was away. As I flipped through picture after picture, reading each day, I realized how selfish I had been to get sad when I would not see my boyfriend for a few days. I feel so stupid for ever complaining about not being around my man when she has been without him for 140 days and has only talked to him about half of the time.

I feel so stupid for getting upset when I can’t talk to my boyfriend for a long period of time when she gets so excited and is so happy when she gets to hear his voice for one minute or tell him she loves him quickly on Facebook.

I hope that one day I can have a love like theirs, as strong as theirs, and as selfless as theirs. Thank you for opening my eyes and reminding me how blessed I am to have received the life I was given and how blessed I am to have the love of my life with me almost everyday.
